Barbie

I recently went to watch Barbie with my friend! So I thought I'd talk about it a bit & give a review. This will not include spoilers, worry not.
I thought it was funny that some people were (and still are) pissy about this movie so I had to watch it and see it for myself.
I went in all pink like everyone else ( + an excruciatingly Pink makeup look) while my friend went in all blue. It's actually crazy boo boo bonkers how many people were dressed in pink! I went to the restroom after the movie and all I could see was people wearing PINK! It's a great color, so I'm not complaining.
Right off the bat the set design was my favorite part of the movie, it's so amazing and accurate and pretty and lively I couldn't help but want to live in Barbieland .. And the costume design was just as good. They did such a great job on this part. I also think the dialogue and the way the barbies and kens carried themselves (for the most part) was good and really did remind me of a kid playing with Barbies.
However that's as far as my praise goes, as the feminist message was very basic & in your face I found it really shallow? and at times actually kinda sexist? And it was Weird for them to try to rebrand barbie as a progressive feminist icon while framing Sasha as being a Woke Leftist Who Calls Everything Fascist and then by the end of the movie now likes barbie and being pink and girly, which of course, means she has been fixed. The portrayal of Mattel as just silly lil guys just silly little fellas and actually Mattel is led by a WOMAN (barbie) was also embarrasing
My biggest gripe with this movie was Sasha. She's just a really strange character to me. No kid talks like that ? It was so weird and jarring and made the messaging of the movie confusing. Another thing that bothered me just a little were the 'slideshows'. It just felt a bit awkward but not too big of an issue....
Overall, I thought it was . okay. And if you haven't seen it yet I'd only do it for the awesome art direction.
Final score : 3/5 stars
